Dear Parents and Students,
My name is James Rogers, and I am the new Director of Bands at Montevallo High School. I am a graduate of Auburn University where I studied underneath Dr. Rick Good, Adam Spurlin, and Matthew Wood. I have worked with many great band programs around the state including bands in Opelika, Auburn, Smith Station, Mountain Brook, and was a section leader in the Auburn University Marching Band. For the past four years I have worked at Childersburg High School, where I have enjoyed rebuilding the band program. While I was at Childersburg, the program doubled in size and developed a high level of musicianship. My wife and I live in the Birmingham area with our 3 year old lab mix, Indiana. Rebecca is a music teacher at Lincoln Elementary. We enjoy spending time with our nieces, and spend a lot of our free time outdoors.
I really look forward to this coming fall and starting the new school year. I have heard many great things about the Montevallo band program and look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that Mr. Lawley established, as well as facilitating growth and more exposure for the program. My hope is to start working towards building not only a great band, but strong musicians and responsible students. With the support of the MHS staff and you, the parents, the Montevallo Band program has a great future ahead of it.
There is a lot that needs to be accomplished in a short amount of time to prepare for next year’s band, and please be on the lookout for information about the upcoming season. First and foremost the band camp dates distributed by Mr. Lawley in February will not change. Here is a copy of those dates 2016 Band Camp Dates. Also I would like to welcome everyone to the band room next Tuesday, June 21st between 6:00pm-7:00pm as an opportunity for me to meet the members of the band and their parents. There will be some refreshments. Finally, attached to this email are links to two online forms. The first form is for parents and students; it is a contact information form. This form will replace the typical student information form passed-out at the beginning of band camp. One form should be completed for each students in band. The second form is a “getting to know you” form and should be filled out by the students.
